The challenge of parking in Sóller

An unsustainable situation

Residents of Sóller, especially those who live in the center and in areas with ORA (parking regulatory ordinance), face constant difficulties in finding parking spaces. This situation has worsened in recent years due to the increase in the number of vehicles and the arrival of tourists with rental cars. This has created continuous traffic jams on the roads and caused a movement on social networks, culminating in the formation of a group of residents who are asking the City Council for solutions.

A call to action

The residents of Carrer de sa Mar, affected by the Gran Via works, have started a collection of signatures through change.org to ask for support in finding solutions to this problem. They consider the situation as ‘unsustainable’ as the number of vehicles exceeds the supply of parking spaces, despite the annual fees they pay. This initiative arose after Sió Bauzá received a fine for not putting in the ORA ticket, despite having the annual card.

Voice of the residents

Lluc Forteza, a young resident of Sóller, has expressed his concern about the parking problem through Sóller Participació Ciutadana. In addition to lamenting the lack of spaces for motorbikes, he has criticized the investment in tourism to the detriment of residents, stating that this has increased the tension in the locality.

Claims beyond the center

Elena Suau and Joan Arbona are other neighbors active in social networks who have claimed solutions for the saturation of vehicles in Sóller. Suau has led a campaign to achieve safe passage for residents of the Deviation road, while Arbona has proposed a reorganization of traffic and the creation of more parking along the road.

Municipal commitment

The mayor, Miquel Nadal, has announced that the government team is working on the recovery of three projects to build new car parks in Sóller. This initiative seeks to address the lack of parking spaces through collaborations with the Council and other entities. It is considered a priority to find lots for these new car parks, and the possibility of awarding the work and operation of the projects to external companies is not ruled out.
