A Journey That Sparks Controversy

President Pedro Sánchez’s recent visit to Africa has rekindled the confrontation between the government and the Popular Party (PP). During his tour of Mauritania, Gambia and Senegal, the Spanish leader has promoted the idea of circular migration, generating intense reactions from the opposition.

Accusations and Responses

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the PP, has criticised Sánchez, accusing him of causing a ‘call effect’ at a critical time for irregular migration in Spain. For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has responded to these accusations, pointing out that the PP is aligning itself with xenophobic and alarmist positions.

The Government’s Vision

Albares stressed that the Government has effective proposals to address the issue of unaccompanied minors, calling for a reform of article 35 of the Immigration Law. Although this modification was presented in Congress, the opposition of the PP and other parties has blocked it.

International Agreements and their Impact

During his meeting with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, Sánchez signed a memorandum that seeks to establish a framework for circular migration, allowing workers to return to their country after a temporary contract in Spain. This strategy is presented as vital for the Spanish economy, although the president acknowledges that it also brings with it challenges.

Position of the Popular Party

The PP, in response to the situation, has proposed that immigrants arrive in Spain with a prior contract and a letter guaranteeing compliance with the law. Feijóo has stated that instead of fighting mafias in Africa, the Government is promoting Spain as an attractive destination, which could aggravate the migration crisis.

Liability Claims

At a recent press conference, government spokeswoman Pilar Alegría urged the PP to adopt a more responsible and less demagogic approach. She criticised the party’s tendency to follow far-right policies, emphasising the importance of dialogue and seeking joint solutions rather than hindering progress.

The Way to the Future

With the migration crisis escalating, the need for a balanced and humane approach becomes more urgent. The Government’s proposal to reform the Immigration Act remains a point of contention, and the debate on immigration is expected to continue to dominate the political agenda in the coming months.
