The decrease in unemployment in Catalonia

The number of unemployed people in Catalonia fell by 1,984 in March, representing a decrease of 0.57% compared to the previous month. This brought the total number of unemployed to 344,389, according to the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy.

In addition, it was reported that unemployment fell by 3,912 people compared to the same month of the previous year, representing a decrease of 1.12% in Catalonia. Nationally, the number of unemployed people registered at the offices of the public employment services fell by 33,405 people in March, a decrease of 1.21% compared to the previous month, reaching a total of 2.73 million.

Distribution by gender and autonomous communities

In Catalonia, women represented 57.1% of the unemployed, while men accounted for 42.88%. Catalonia was the sixth autonomous community where unemployment fell the most, with falls led by Andalusia, the Canary Islands and the Valencian Community, while it rose in the Basque Country and Madrid.

Decrease in unemployment by province

In year-on-year terms, a drop in unemployment was observed in Girona, Tarragona, Lleida and Barcelona. These declines ranged from 0.34% to 4.86%.

Sectors with decreasing and increasing unemployment

Unemployment fell in services, industry and agriculture, but rose among the unemployed with no previous employment and in the construction sector.

In terms of recruitment, in March 187,946 contracts were registered in Catalonia, of which 45.94% were indefinite and 54.06% temporary. This represents a year-on-year decrease of 22,494 contracts (-10.69%) and a month-on-month drop of 746 contracts (-0.4%).
