A picture that causes reflections
I recently ran into an image showing the leaders of Working Commissions and UGT, Unai Sordo and Pepe Álvarez, under the provocative slogan: “Less work, better life.” This snapshot seemed to me a reflection of an inappropriate moment, as these union representatives are often perceived as proponents of good life more than labor rights. Despite this, I did not give it more importance, as his figure does not raise any interest to me.
La vacant with Eina Political
Recently, the image has returned to my mind following the last blockade of the commuter transfer, which has again faced a new obstacle: a strike announced by the same unions if the Spanish government does not withdraw its commitment to transfer the management of the railway system, considered one of the worst in Europe.
Unionism and politics: a complicated relationship
The relationship between these unions and political parties is well known and, in the Catalan context, is a topic that can be considered a failure. When Commissions and UGT are engaged in defending partisan interests, they unleash their true mission: the defense of labor rights.
The context of the transfer of suburbs
The debate on the transfer of Rodalies is an example of a political pact between the PSOE and Together. It is understandable to oppose this decision, but calling for a strike of Renfe machinists makes it a political action more than a struggle for the improvement of the service. What will the opinion of the workers affiliate with these unions, who every day waste time due to the deficiencies of the RENFE service?
The case of Anoia and the future of the railway
In the region of Anoia, the presence of Renfe is practically non -existent. There is only one line that connects with Manresa, a historical layout that has not evolved adequately for more than 150 years. The decision to pass the line between Barcelona and Madrid through Manresa instead of Martorell or Igualada has had negative consequences that are now evident.
Silence in the face of reality
It is curious that neither political parties nor unions have raised their voices to the numerous delays suffered by Catalan travelers. This situation has been standardized, and even environmentalists who promote public transport seem to ignore the unfortunate reality of the railway service.
An alternative model: Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat
Catalonia has a railway management model that could serve as an example: the Generalitat Railways. Although the R-6 line presents difficulties, railways offer a much more positive experience in terms of cleaning, punctuality and comfort.
The key question
If there is a management model that goes beyond Renfe, why does it not apply in our region? It is bewildering to think that union leaders have not personally experienced Renfe’s shortcomings. If they had done so, they should actively defend the transfer of suburbs instead of maintaining a position that seems more focused on personal interests than in improving the service and the defense of workers.
