The European Union in the face of the conflict in the Middle East and Ukraine

Tension in the Middle East dominates the European summit

The European Union faces a crucial diplomatic challenge at its summit this week, marked by escalating tensions in the Middle East following Iran’s attack on Israel. The conflict has eclipsed the initial agenda, focused on European competitiveness.

Strong message against Iran

European leaders intend to send an unequivocal message to prevent a regional escalation and contain both sides. Among the planned measures is the expansion of sanctions against Iran, which already faces restrictions for its support for Russia in the war in Ukraine.

Sanctions on the horizon

Although no final decisions will be made during the summit, foreign ministers will discuss the expansion of sanctions next Monday.

Ukraine, also on the agenda

In addition to the Middle East conflict, the war in Ukraine will be another central topic at the summit. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will speak by videoconference to reiterate the EU’s support for kyiv and condemn Russian attacks against civilians and critical infrastructure.

Relations with Türkiye under scrutiny

Finally, the summit will include a strategic debate on relations with Turkey, following a report commissioned by Josep Borrell on the state of political, economic and commercial ties between the EU and Ankara.
