An oncology expert shares the latest trends

Josep Tabernero, a recognized oncologist and director of the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology, has shared his vision on the future of cancer research. In a recent interview, he addressed both the advances in the treatments and the persistent concerns in the detection and prevention of the disease.

Improvements in patient survival

The statistics of the Ministry of Health show a significant increase in the survival rates of cancer patients, which have increased from 35% to 55% in men and 66% in women in recent years. This positive tendency is attributed to continuous research and advancement in knowledge of the disease, which have allowed to develop more effective treatments.

The European target for 2030

The European Union has set an ambitious goal: to achieve a 70% survival rate by 2030. As science progresses, it becomes clear that early detection and cancer research are key to achieving this milestone .

The need to prevent

Despite the improvements in the treatment, Tabernero emphasizes the importance of prevention. Each year, cancer diagnoses increase between 3% and 4%, which shows that, despite advances, there are still 45% of cases that could be avoided with healthier lifestyle.

Lifestyle and cancer

Cancer is a disease that is often related to aging, but Tabernero warns that more and more cases are diagnosed in young people. Factors such as diet, physical activity and tobacco use play a crucial role in the incidence of the disease.

Pollution and public health

Dr. Tabernero also points to pollution as a significant risk factor. The relationship between increasing environmental pollution and increasing cancers, especially lungs, is becoming more and more evident. Also, the regulation of sources of pollution, such as diesel boilers, becomes essential for improving public health.

Innovations in treatments

Immunotherapy has emerged as one of the most promising innovations in cancer treatment. Tabernero explains that the immune system can be a powerful ally against the disease, and is currently working to enhance its ability to recognize and combat cancer cells.

THE PAPER OF THE MICROBIOMA

The study of the microbiome, the community of microorganisms that inhabits our body, has gained importance in cancer research. Its alteration may influence the development of the disease, and the understanding of this aspect opens new avenues for prevention and treatment.

Looking to the future

As science progresses and new therapies are explored, Tabernero emphasizes the importance of training and awareness of health. The combination of a healthy lifestyle and medical innovation can make a difference in the fight against cancer.
