The Government approves the second edition of the school voucher in Catalonia

More beneficiaries and new modifications

The Catalan Government has given the go-ahead to the second edition of the school voucher for the purchase of school supplies for students. After the success of the first edition, the Catalan executive has decided to continue offering economic and social support to families to alleviate the costs associated with schooling. In this new edition, significant changes have been introduced in order to benefit a greater number of students.

Extension of beneficiaries

In this second edition, the number of beneficiaries of the school voucher has been expanded. In addition to primary education students, ESO students from all public and charter schools in Catalonia, as well as students from special education centers and basic degree training courses, will now also be able to enjoy this support. This represents a significant increase in the number of students who will receive this financial aid, reaching nearly 790,000 people.

Budgets and modifications

The budgets of the Generalitat for 2024 provided for an item of 55 million euros for the school voucher, allocating 70 euros per student. Due to the budget extension, this item has remained at 50 million euros, reducing the amount of the voucher to 60 euros, 10 less than initially planned. However, the will to support families for the purchase of school supplies remains.

Conditions and period of use of the voucher

Vouchers can be redeemed in affiliated commercial establishments or transferred to educational centers for the joint purchase of school supplies. They must be used to purchase material such as writing materials, stationery, books, dictionaries, calculators, backpacks and educational games before November 30, 2024. The two vouchers per student, of 30 euros each, will be distributed by mail postal and can be activated from the valescolar.cat platform.

Success of the first edition

95.1% of primary school students in all public and chartered schools in Catalonia used the voucher to purchase school supplies in 2023. This represented a total of 424,838 students and 849,619 vouchers redeemed, equivalent to an amount of 42 .3 million euros.
