Every 19th of August, Tarragona pays homage to its co-patron saint, Sant Magí, a celebration that dates back to 1529, according to historical records. However, it is believed that the festivities in his honour could have started much earlier, in the 14th century, as suggested by studies by local historians.

Devotion to Sant Magí is rooted in the 4th century, in a flourishing Tarragona within the Roman Empire. This saint, known for his life of retreat at the source of the Gaià River, became a symbol of resistance against Roman persecution. His story reminds us of the importance of local traditions and their ability to be reborn even after long periods of oblivion.
From the Fall to the Renaissance
Following the Arab invasion and the abandonment of Tarragona between 714 and 1114, the figure of Saint Magí fell into oblivion. However, the rebirth of the city brought with it the restoration of the cult, and from the 16th century, his figure began to occupy a prominent place in the cultural and spiritual life of the community.
