The impact of photography in Palma and its evolution over time

The book that portrays the history of Palma through old photographs

Next Friday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m., the Can Sales Library in Palma will be the setting for the presentation of the work ‘Review of Palma, a look at the past’, published by Dolmen Editorial. This book, curated by the HIST collective (Historical Images of Mallorca), collects a selection of photographs captured by the camera of Melchor Guardia Cuader.

The photographer and his passion for capturing everyday life

This new volume is available in both Catalan and Spanish and is the result of months of work to select the most emblematic and significant images of La Palma portrayed by the photographer. Guardia, the son of Aragonese parents who immigrated to Barcelona in the mid-19th century, began his career as a women’s hairdresser in Palma. His love of hiking and photography grew over time, and after buying a Voigtländer camera at Casa Vila in the mid-1950s, he began to devote more time to it, with extraordinary results.

With this camera, he captured dawns, backlights and reflections in the streets. His lens immortalized the everyday life of his surroundings: urban trades, children’s games, fishermen and their nets. In short, the day-to-day life of the Mallorca of yesteryear that still lives on in the memories of many people.

The presentation by the members of the HIST collective

The event will have the participation of Llorenç Miró, Sebastià Bauzà, Pep Llodrá and José Luis Sanmartín, members of HIST, who will be in charge of presenting this valuable work that invites us to contemplate and reflect on the past of the city of Palma through with a unique and captivating look.
