The Loss of a Spirit Leader: Reflections on the Pope Francesc

An emotional farewell

The world stops to remember Pope Francis, who has left this world at the age of 88. The news was revealed by Cardinal Kevin Farrell in a press conference in the Vatican, stating: ‘The bishop of Rome Francesc has returned to the father’s house’. His health had recently deteriorated, with weeks of hospitalization due to respiratory complications. However, he made a public appearance only one day before his death, offering the blessing Urbi et Orbi from the balcony of Plaça de Sant Pere.

A pontiff committed to social justice

Pope Francis, who took 266th place on the list of pontiffs, has left a deep imprint on the history of the Church. During his twelve years of service, he distinguished himself by his reformist stance, addressing issues such as sexual abuse within the Church and fighting the ultra -conservative extremism. His dedication to make the voices of the most vulnerable and give more prominence to women in the Church has been one of their most significant legacies.

Barcelona commemorating great leadership

The Cathedral of Barcelona has decided to join the collective mourning for the loss of Pope Francis. From 12 noon, the chapel of Santa Llúcia will open its doors for those who want to pay tribute, with a commemorative image and a book of condolences available to the faithful. During the Easter Mass, scheduled for 7.15 pm and chaired by Cardinal Archbishop Joan Josep Omella, a special prayer will be held in memory of the pope.

An innovative in tradition

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, born in Buenos Aires, was chosen Pope in 2013, becoming the first Jesuit, the first Latin American and the first Spanish-speaking to hold this position. He chose the name of Francesc in tribute to Saint Francis of Assisi, symbolizing his desire that the Church be dedicated to serving the needs. ‘For me, he represents poverty, peace and love for creation,’ he expressed in reference to the Franciscan founder.

An open and inclusive approach

Pope Francis has been known for his frank attitude to controversial issues that affect the Catholic Church. He was a pioneer in the sentence of laws that penalized homosexual relations, saying that all, including homosexual people, are children of God with the right to a family life. He also showed a more flexible attitude towards the use of contraceptives, considering them as a ‘minor evil’ to prevent the spread of diseases.

Reflections on the Pope’s legacy

With his death, the world not only loses a religious leader, but also a passionate defender of social justice and human dignity. His vision of the Church as an organism committed to society is still an example for future generations. Its influence on the way of perceiving faith and its call to live with simplicity resonate in the choirs of millions of people around the world.
