The Mediterranean as a platform for dialogue and youth peace

An innovative project: Med25 – Bel Espoir

In 2025 it is presented as a key year for the transformation of the Mediterranean into a space of coexistence and dialogue, thanks to the Med25 initiative: Bel Espoir. This proposal, promoted by the archdiocese of Marseille, seeks to unite young people of various cultures and religions on board a schooner, with the aim of making them agents of change in their communities.

The origin of a transformative vision

The inspiration for this project was born in Palermo, where Mn. Alexis Leproux realized the urgent need for a youth-dedicated school. The idea was strongly thanks to the conversation with Luca, a sea rescuer who expressed the desire to transform the Mediterranean of a tragedy space into a life and hope.

The route to the realization

The project itinerary began with the intention of holding a ‘Meeting of the Mediterranean’ in Marseille. With the unexpected visit of Pope Francis, the initial plan was altered, but served as a catalyst for a pilot experience in Tirana, which was a resounding success. With the support of an association dedicated to social reintegration, the adequate schooner was found for the exciting crossing.

Criteria of choice of participants

The project is open to young people between the ages of 20 and 35 who represent the cultural and religious diversity of the Mediterranean. The inclusion of participants of different origins is essential to enrich the experience and foster authentic dialogue.

Life on board: A transformative experience

Young people will spend fifteen days on board, alternating between navigation and land activities. The routine will include sailor’s tasks, as well as training and reflection spaces, where a specific topic will be worked out every day that will contribute to the creation of a ‘white book’ of the project.

Impact and growth expectations

The organizers hope this experience will help participants recognize the value of dialogue and interpersonal relationships. Rigid expectations are not established on the results; It is wanted to be the young people themselves who decide the future collaborations and projects.

Pre -Adventure Preparation

Prior to the journey, participants receive training through preparatory sessions and virtual exchanges, although the preparation is not excessively intense, recognizing the responsibilities that many already have.

The key role of young people in the construction of peace

This stage of life is considered ideal for instilling essential values and fostering a commitment to peace. Young people, with their openness to dialogue, are seen as future agents of positive change.

Reflections on synodality and diversity

The project aligns with the principles of synodality, promoting coexistence and respect for diversity as a source of wealth. This experience is an opportunity to learn to live and work together, building a real fraternity.

A future full of hope

The dream of the organizers is for young people to become true ‘peace artisans’ in their communities. Although the fruits of this experience are uncertain, it is confident that the connections and friendships that are forgive during the crossing will give rise to innovative and transformative initiatives.
