An Unforgettable Jazz Evening
Last weekend, the charming stage of Paseo del Molinet in l’Estartit hosted an exceptional concert by the legendary saxophonist Charles Lloyd, a true pillar of contemporary jazz. His music, identifiable from the first note, captures the imagination of the spectators with its magnetism. Known for his rich compositions and captivating improvisations, Lloyd opened a window into his sonic world alongside superb musicians.
Collaborations that Make a Difference
For this unique performance, Lloyd was joined by Danish guitarist Jakob Bro and the Sky Trio, consisting of double bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Eric Harland. The concert began with a sprawling composition, built on a seductive bass line, interspersed with Harland’s innovative rhythm. This allowed the public to begin to place themselves within an unprecedented musical space.
The Essence of the Agreement
Bro, with his introspective style and occasional use of electronic effects, seamlessly integrated into the group’s sonic fabric. With his reserved demeanor, he found moments of brilliance that surprised the audience, especially towards the end of the show, where he let himself be carried away in a stunning solo around a blues theme.
A Musical Union
Lloyd, as always, mesmerized the audience with his tenor sax, flute and small percussion instruments, while Grenadier and Harland provided a solid foundation with attention-grabbing solos. One of the high points of the night was the interpretation of “Zoltan” with a fresh and dynamic approach, as well as the emblematic melodies of ‘La llorona’ and ‘Rabo de nube’, which created an almost mystical atmosphere.
The Talent of L’Emmet Cohen Trio
Before Charles Lloyd, the young pianist Emmet Cohen opened the night with his trio, presenting himself as one of the most prominent voices in jazz today. Originally from Florida, Cohen showed his versatility on the piano with a repertoire that ranged from lyrical themes such as “Lion Song” to compositions with lively rhythms such as “Mosaic”.
Synergy and Talent at Planell
Accompanied by veteran drummer Joe Farnsworth and up-and-coming double bassist Joey Ranieri, Cohen demonstrated an instant connection with his bandmates. Farnsworth, with his rhythmic strength and exquisite style, perfectly complemented Cohen’s melodic words, while Ranieri ensured a stable foundation, providing moments of light of his own.
An Event That Transcends the World of Jazz
Both performances were not only a reminder of the power of jazz, but also aligned with the motto of Sea Jazz L’Estartit: ‘A refuge from the fury of the world’. This reflection on the quiet beauty of music stayed with the audience long after the last notes had faded. Such emotional intensity and connection with the artists made this evening an unforgettable experience that attendees will remember for a long time.
