A worrying increase in fatalities
The roads of the interurban road network in the territorial area of Catalonia have experienced an alarming increase in fatalities in the first months of this year. As of May 31, a total of 11 people have been reported killed in traffic accidents in the region, almost triple the 4 fatalities that occurred during the same period last year (https://www .softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/). This increase is particularly worrying for motorists, since almost half of the victims (5 out of 11) are precisely motorists.
A situation contrasted with the downward trend in Catalonia
Despite this increase in accidents in the region, a downward trend in the number of fatalities has been observed in Catalonia as a whole. Until the month of May, a total of 48 people have died in traffic accidents in Catalonia, a reduction of 21% compared to the same period last year (https://www.softcatala.org/resum- of-texts-in-catalan/). Despite this, the month of May this year has been the most sinister, with a total of 13 fatalities on Catalan roads. In the region, this month has also been particularly tragic, with a total of 6 victims, 4 of whom were motorcyclists.
Motorists, the group most affected
Motorists continue to be the group most affected by traffic accidents in the region. In just five months, the same number of deaths as in the whole of last year have already been recorded, with a total of 5 victims (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/ ). At the level of the entire Catalan territory, a slight reduction in the number of accidents involving motorists has been observed, with 15 victims up to the month of May this year, compared to the 19 victims last year. Despite this slight improvement, motorists continue to represent a third of the total number of fatalities in Catalonia.
Other vulnerable groups
Apart from motorists, there are also other vulnerable groups that have suffered the consequences of traffic accidents in the region. So far, 2 pedestrians have been killed in traffic accidents, a figure lower than the 7 pedestrians killed during the same period last year throughout Catalonia. These accidents took place on the C-55, in Castellbell and Vilar, and on the C-37, in Santa Margarida de Montbui.
Diversity of affected roads
Fatal accidents have occurred on several roads in the region, including the C-15, C-25, B-400, A-2, C-451, N-260, C-37 and C-55 (https: //www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/). However, the road with the most accidents is the C-25, with a total of three fatal accidents since the beginning of the year. It is noteworthy that recently, on this road, there have been the deaths of two motorists from Artés in an interval of five days (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/).
