Vision towards decarbonisation
Saül Garreta, president of the Tarragona Port Authority (APT), stated this Monday that the port is on a determined path towards sustainability, with the aim of achieving complete decarbonisation by 2050. This declaration took place during a press conference held at Teatret del Serrallo, where Garreta shared the progress made in the two years of his management.
Environmental restoration projects
As part of this transformation, the president emphasized the importance of recovering local ecosystems. A concrete example is the Prats d’Albinyana de Vila-seca restoration project, which has an estimated budget of 2.3 million euros. In addition, several environmental actions are being carried out in areas such as Horts del Vinyet and the mouths of the Gaià and Francolí rivers.
Catalonia as a center of energy innovation
Garreta also stressed the importance of locating the headquarters of Vall de l’Hydrogen de Catalunya in Tarragona, a step that has been key in attracting the interest of multiple companies in the renewable energy sector. The port has as priority objectives the creation of a value chain for hydrogen and the development of the offshore wind industry.
A look at the economic future
In the economic field, Garreta affirmed that the port is in a strong position to become a benchmark in Catalonia, Spain and the Mediterranean region. He shared that during the years 2022 and 2023, the port has achieved revenues of more than 60 million euros, thus establishing a solid foundation for its future.
Strategic investments for growth
The port is ready to start an ambitious program of public investments amounting to 412 million euros between 2024 and 2028. Among the outstanding projects is the Logistics Activities Zone (ZAL), which will have a budget of 22, 8 million euros, as well as the completion of access to this area, with an investment of 13 million. Garreta also mentioned the final phase of the PortTarragona Guadalajara-Marchamalo terminal, which is expected to be completed by mid-2025 at a cost of 20 million.
The port as a European hub
Finally, Garreta expressed the port’s aspiration to become one of the European hubs for the development of offshore wind farms in the Western Mediterranean, highlighting the interest of seventeen companies in the sector to move their operations to the Tarragona port complex .
