An early reaction to the ERC-PSC agreement
The Popular Party has taken the initiative in the face of the invitation that the agreement between ERC and PSC for the investiture of Salvador Illa entails. Without waiting for the formation of the new government, the PP has registered a proposal to modify the Sports Law, with which it seeks to withdraw from the State the competences in sports matters, with the intention of curbing the international visibility of the national teams Catalan
Defending a centralized vision
The deputy secretary of the PP, Noelia Núñez, has defended her position, stating that the proposal of the coalition between republicans and socialists distorts the unified image that Spain should have in terms of sports. According to her, ‘competence must belong to the State’, highlighting the importance of maintaining a coherent and non-segmented representation that can make internal distinctions between territories.
A supranational approach
Núñez has emphasized that sports representation must be considered from a supraterritorial perspective, claiming that the promotion of the Catalan national teams would compromise the external image of the country. With reference to article 149.1.3 of the Constitution, he has argued that this competence must be managed exclusively by the State.
The efforts of ERC and PSC in their agenda
On the other hand, the agreement between ERC and PSC envisages the creation of a Government Office to promote Catalan sports federations at international level, thus highlighting the uniqueness of Catalan competitions. This project is based on article 48.2 of the Sports Law, which facilitates the participation of those federations with a historical basis.
Criticism of the socialist position
The People’s Deputy Secretary has not been accusing the PSC of violating fundamental principles in exchange for the presidency of the Generalitat, warning that the PP will not allow such conduct. He has called on the influential voices within the PSOE to act in defense of the common interests of Spaniards, instigating an active opposition to the agreement with ERC to avoid a modification of the Organic Law on the financing of the autonomous communities.
Citing national responsibility
Núñez has demanded that the socialist representatives be important and vote against any change that could increase autonomous powers at the service of projects that may not represent the State as a whole.
