The recovery of Catalan-Aragonese sovereignty in Aran is 711 years ago

The Treaty of Poissy and Catalan-Aragonese sovereignty

Today, 711 years ago, a treaty was signed in Poissy, on the outskirts of Paris, which marked the recovery of Catalan-Aragonese sovereignty in Aran. This treaty was signed by the diplomatic representatives of the crowns of Mallorca-Rosselló and Catalonia-Aragon. With this agreement, the country of Aran once again became part of the Catalan-Aragonese sovereignty, being attached to the Principality of Catalonia. This event took place on the day like today in the year 1313.

The promulgation of the Ceremony

A few months after the signing of the treaty, King James II promulgated the Querimonia. This document, known as the Magna Carta of Aran, established a set of privileges and privileges to strengthen the bond between Aran society and the Catalan-Aragonese Crown. The Ceremony guaranteed the free and frank possession of the Aranese people of their mountains, as well as the free use of natural resources such as water, fishing, pastures, hunting and forests.

The history of Aran and its relationship with the French monarchy

It should be noted that the country of Aran had been invaded by the French monarchy in 1238, during the Catalan-Aragonese conquest campaign of the Valencian Country. After several Catalan attempts to recover, it was agreed to cede control of the territory to a third, theoretically neutral state. Thus, since 1298, the country of Aran was part of the domain of the crown of Mallorca-Rosselló. However, with the signing of the treaty of Poissy in 1313, Aran once again became part of the Catalan-Aragonese sovereignty.

The importance of the Ceremony over the centuries

The Ceremony was confirmed by all the monarchs of the Catalan-Aragonese Crown and the Hispanic Monarchy. In addition, it was confirmed by the Bourbons in the 17th century, despite the New Plant Decree of 1717. However, during the 19th century, the Bourbon regime closed the General Council of Aran and repealed the Cerimonia. Despite this, this document has had a significant impact on the history of Aran and on its relationship with the Catalan-Aragonese sovereignty.
