The recovery of historical memory: exhumation of a republican soldier

A Step Forwards in Democratic Memory

The Department of Justice and Democratic Quality has begun an important process of recovering historical memory with the exhumation of the remains of a republican soldier who lost his life during the Spanish Civil War. This intervention, carried out by the Directorate General for Democratic Memory, was carried out in the Masia de la Novella Baixa, located in Vila-sana, a place that was key as a campaign hospital for the republican forces.

Historical context and importance of exhumation

During the conflict, this space served as a refuge and care for soldiers injured between December 28, 1938 and January 3, 1939, under the direction of captain Doctor Agustín Pérez Soler. At a time when the Francoist troops advanced, the hospital was vital for the survival of the fighters. According to historical documents, at least two soldiers died in this hospital, and local testimonies have stated that there are likely to be more buried bodies in the area.

Excavation methodology

The excavation was carried out between February 17 and April 1 as part of the Generalitat’s Plan of Fosses, with both manual and mechanical techniques to identify possible burial sites. Although expectations were high to recover more remains, only one body has been found, which highlights the complexity of these interventions.

In progress and future objectives

Exhumed remains are currently subject to anthropological and genetic studies to determine their identity. The aim is to be able to return the remains to the relatives listed in the census of missing persons, an initiative that seeks to restore the dignity and memory of those who were victims of the conflict.

Contributions to historical research

In addition to human remains, the archeological team has documented important findings, such as four silos of modern times and circular structures that could be of medieval origin. These findings are not only relevant to local history, but also help to deepen the study of the Civil War period and the Franco dictatorship, providing valuable data for both science and historiography.

Final reflection on the importance of memory

The recovery of the remains of this soldier is a reminder of the duty to remember and honor those who fought for freedom and democracy. As we continue to work on the identification of the remains, the importance of these initiatives for historical repair and social reconciliation are clear.
