The restoration of a masterpiece: Sant Martí renews his splendor

A memorable event at the Diocesan Museum

On Thursday, April 3, the Diocesan Museum of Barcelona was the scene of a significant presentation, focusing on the restoration of one of its most valuable works: the central table of the Gothic altarpiece of Sant Martí, from the parish of Teià. The act, called “Sant Martí again”, attracted the attention of numerous attendees.

Commitment to Artistic Heritage

Mn. Robert Baró, who leads the Diocesan Museum, emphasized the importance of its mission: the recovery and preservation of artistic heritage. The restoration of the Sant Martí Gothic altarpiece perfectly exemplifies this commitment.

A meticulous and collaborative process

The restaurateurs Beatriz Montobbio and Lourdes Domedel have described the restoration process as “Long and Laboriós”. With the support of Mireia Mestre, director of the Center for the Restoration of Real Estate of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the synergy between the two institutions was highlighted.

L’Amportant Paper de les Restauradores

Mestre emphasized the importance of the work done by Montobbio and Domedel, who carried out the restoration at the CRBMC facilities in Valldoreix. Experts said that the first step was a thorough evaluation of the state of conservation of the work.

Revelations of the restorative process

With the help of a visual presentation, the restaurateurs illustrated the attendees the route of the restoration, showing shocking images of the ‘before’ and ‘then’. Among the actions performed, they emphasized the cleaning of the accumulated dirt and the removal of varnish layers that had altered the original colors of the work.

An artistic treasure with a mystery

Dr. Rosa Alcoy, an art history expert, described the central table of the Sant Martí altarpiece as a “exceptional watermark”, emphasizing its beauty and the riddle that surrounds its author, which is unknown.

A pattern with a rich story

Finally, Josep M. Balada, representative of the Sant Martí Space in the parish of Teià, shared with the attendees the meaning of the figure of Sant Martí as the patron saint of the town, providing a cultural and historical context that enriches the understanding of the work.
