The Borkum ship changes plans
The ship Borkum, which is carrying a cargo of weapons bound for the Czech Republic and was scheduled to call at Cartagena, has abandoned that call and said it is heading directly to Slovenia to transfer the cargo from there to Prague. The owner of the cargo ship has communicated this decision to Capitania Marítima. The ship was anchored at Cabo Tiñoso, in waters off Cartagena, waiting to dock at the Escombreras terminal, but has finally decided not to make that stop and head for Slovenia.
Reasons for the decision
This change of plans for the Borkum ship has occurred after the controversies and suspicions about its loading. Although the ship had permission to call in Cartagena, there had been doubts about whether it was carrying weapons destined for Israel. Pro-Palestinian associations and the Podemos political party had expressed concern and called for the contents of the cargo to be verified. Despite this, the Spanish government had denied that the shipment was destined for Israel.
The decision of the Spanish government
The Spanish government has taken the decision to reject any ship that brings arms to Israel and wants to call at a Spanish port. This decision has been taken after another ship, the Marianne Danica, which was carrying engines for military rockets destined for Israel, was denied permission to call. The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, has stated that this is the first time that this decision has been taken and that it is consistent with the policy of not granting new licenses for the export of war material destined for Israel.
The Borkum ship and its final destination
The ship Borkum, despite refusing to stop in Cartagena, has all the documentation in order and is heading directly to Slovenia. From there, it will transfer its cargo to Prague, in the Czech Republic, which is its final destination.
