Unides Podemos demands urgent explanations
Unides Podem (UP) has presented a request for an urgent appearance of the Minister of the Sea and the Water Cycle, Juan Manuel Lafuente Mir, to address the devastating repercussions of the recent DANA in the Balearic Islands. The political formation demands that Lafuente provide details on the significant damage, especially in Menorca, where the torrents have overflowed, causing considerable material losses and beach closures due to fecal pollution.
The consequences of the storm
In Menorca, the situation became critical, with trapped families who needed air rescue. Both main and secondary roads became inaccessible, isolating several urban areas. In addition, the torrents washed away parked vehicles, causing numerous damages to private properties and commercial establishments.
Criticisms on the maintenance of torrents
Deputy Cristina Gómez, representative of UP in Menorca, has emphasized that the lack of maintenance of the torrents is a key factor in the magnitude of the damage caused. Gómez has collected the complaints of bailiffs from different municipalities, who have expressed their concern regardless of their political color. He also pointed out that weather experts had warned in advance about the risks associated with DANA.
Climate change and its effects
The deputy added that phenomena like this will become increasingly common and intense due to climate change and the increase in the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea. This reality means that the authorities must take immediate measures to minimize future damage.
It calls for more transparency in emergency management
UP has also requested the appearance of the Councilor of the Presidency to analyze the operations and protocols of the General Directorate of Emergencies during the week of August 12 to 18. We want to detail the coordination with security forces, councils and other organizations to implement the measures of the Terbal Plan and the communication with the public about the actions to be followed in the face of the storm.
