Remembering the Rwandan Genocide
Thirty years ago, the Rwandan genocide shocked the world with its cruelty. This African conflict, which still persists with violent variants in other countries of the continent, caused the death of hundreds of thousands of people. Among the victims of this massacre was the Catalan missionary Quim Vallmajó Sala, known as Quim Vallmajó, who belonged to the White Fathers community.
A tribute to his memory
To keep the memory of Quim Vallmajó and his work alive, various organizations and administrations have organized an extensive program of commemorative events. The Group of Empordanes and Empordanes for Solidarity (GEES), which has reappeared expressly for this occasion, together with the town councils of Figueres and Navata, the public school that bears his name, Justice and Peace, the County Council from the Alt Empordà, Diòptria, Agenda Latinoamericana and Elisabet Vallmajó, are some of the collectives that lead this tribute.
Commemorative events
The commemorative events will begin on Friday 19 April in Plaça de la Solidaritat and will take place throughout the month of April and May in Figueres, Navata, Girona and Arbúcies. These events will include floral offerings, mass, round tables and presentations of books and documentaries related to the figure of Quim Vallmajó and the Rwandan genocide.
A memory of courage and commitment
Quim Vallmajó was known for his courage and his commitment to peace and justice. As a missionary, he defended these values with great power, and his legacy continues to inspire many people today. His memory lives on in the people who believe in these ideals and in those who have not yet embraced them.
