The cry of the UN rapporteur in Brussels
The UN special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territory, Francesca Albanese, has urged Brussels to take punitive measures against Israel for the tragedy in Gaza. Albanese calls for the imposition of an arms embargo on the Government of Benjamin Netanyahu in order to achieve a permanent ceasefire and stop the terrible situation in the region.
Report on the situation in Gaza
According to the report presented by Albanese in the European Parliament, the situation in Gaza is alarming, with a high number of victims, including a large percentage of displaced children. The report suggests the existence of genocidal acts by Israel against the population in the Gaza Strip, which would require strong actions by the international community.
UN call to action
Albanese calls on UN members to implement an arms embargo on Israel and support legal actions brought by countries such as South Africa at the International Court of Justice. Furthermore, he calls for a thorough investigation into violations of international law, as well as demanding full reparations for the damage caused in Gaza.
Criticism of the EU’s position
Both Albanese and Manu Pineda, an IU MEP, have criticized the European Union’s position, pointing out the need to recognize the seriousness of the situation in Gaza. Pineda denounces the supply of weapons to Israel and the financing of companies that manufacture equipment used in the conflict, while Albania sends a direct message to EU leaders, urging them to take urgent action.
