Beginning of works and effects on traffic
From February 10, the city of Reus will experience a significant change with the start of redevelopment work on Ample Street and Plaça del Pintor Fortuny. This project will cause changes in circulation from February 17, with the aim of improving urban mobility.
A strategic mobility plan
The Mobility and Circulation Service, in collaboration with the City Council of Reus and the company in charge, has designed a plan to manage the effects on traffic for the planned duration of the works, which will be extended until March 2026 .
Phases of the works
The works will be divided into three phases, starting with the section of Ample Street between Plaça del Víctor and Paseo Mata, with an estimated duration of five months. The redevelopment of Alt de Sant Josep street will also be included in this initial phase.
The second phase will begin in summer, approaching the rest of Calle Ample, and the third phase, which will affect the places of freedom and the painter Fortuny, is expected to begin in October.
Record of traffic
From February 17, traffic on Ample Street will be restricted. Vehicles will have to divert through alternative streets, with restricted access to neighbors and service vehicles. New loading and unloading areas will be created to facilitate commercial activity.
Benefits of the new urbanization
With a budget of more than two million euros, this project seeks to transform the use of public space, prioritizing pedestrians about vehicles. In the new urbanization, 63% of the space is expected to be dedicated to pedestones, while 26% will be for vehicles.
Green spaces and sustainability
One of the highlights will be the introduction of more than 330 m² of green areas, as well as a design that will allow to manage rainwater in a sustainable way, helping the recharge of aquifers.
A New Space for the Community
The rearrangement around the Plaza de la Llibertat will create a broad space for citizen use, including areas for restaurants and recreation areas. The vegetation will not only beautify the environment, but will also contribute to local biodiversity.
Innovation in lighting and design
The new lighting system, designed to prevent obstacles, will provide adequate lighting, improving the security and attractiveness of the space. In addition, the varied pavement and wooden furniture facilities will encourage social activity.
Rearrangement of the Plaça del Pintor Fortuny
Finally, the area around the sculpture of the Fortuny painter will be remodeled, improving its visibility and accessibility. This intervention will not only enhance the sculpture, but also strengthen the connection with the adjacent streets.
With this redevelopment, Reus is preparing for a new era of use of public space, where the coexistence between vehicles and pedestrians is redesigned to create a friendlier and more sustainable environment.
