Salou marks a new precedent in urban planning
This Saturday, Salou has inaugurated a work that redefines its urban image and its relationship with its citizens. The reform of Carles Buïgas Avenue not only represents a breakthrough in the vianalization, but is a significant step towards a more sustainable and accessible city.
A space for people and nature
With more than a kilometer of renewed area, Carles Buïgas Avenue has been transformed into a space dedicated to citizen coexistence and renaturalization. The disappearance of more than 200 daily buses and private vehicles has released the space, which now includes cultural elements that narrate the rich story of Salou, including a sculpture that symbolizes the famous light source.
Significant investment for the future
With a total budget of 5.6 million euros, the reform has received significant support from the European Union, which has contributed to 3 million euros through the Next Generation Fund. This investment not only physically transforms the avenue, but also seeks to improve the quality of life of the residents and the thousands of tourists who visit the area.
An artistic and historical journey
During the inauguration, the Mayor of Salou, Pere Granados, emphasized the importance of the work as a reflection of the policies for the recovery of public spaces. The 16 artistic medallions, created by local artists, offer a unique perspective on the history of the municipality, while a mural and a commemorative sculpture pay homage to key figures in Salou’s past.
A design designed for the citizen
The remodeling includes a new drainage infrastructure and an LED lighting system, improving the aesthetics and functionality of the space. Elements such as benches, bins and gardens have been added that not only beautify the avenue, but also foster a safer and more pleasant atmosphere for all.
Benefits for community and tourism
With the duplicity of pedestrian space, Carles Buïgas Avenue is transformed into a social and commercial meeting space. Granados said that this initiative not only revitalizes the area, but also helps to seasonalize tourism, creating a new centrality that benefits both residents and visitors throughout the year.
A sustainable city model
The Deputy Delegate of the Spanish Government in Tarragona, Elisabeth Rodríguez, emphasized that this project is an example of how European funds can have a real and positive impact on cities. The reform of Carles Buïgas Avenue represents a paradigm shift in the way public space is conceived, betting on a kinder and more inclusive urban model.
