Waste management challenges in Puigcerdà: a year of promises and realities

The current context of waste collection

At the moment when the Puigcerdà governing body, formed by Junts and Futur, has been in power for two years, the situation of the garbage collection system is still a hot topic. Improvement promises seem to be forgotten, leaving an underdeast image for a tourist destination.

Costs and transparency in management

With a selective collection contract that amounts to 1.5 million euros, citizens have experienced a significant increase in rates. However, the lack of transparency of the current government is alarming. Last year, it was reported that in 2025 a new waste collection service would be implemented, with the aim of improving system efficiency and justice.

Promises and realities

The City Council mentioned that it was collaborating with a consulting company to draft new specifications for service bidding, but the reality is that, two years later, tenders are non -existent and the containers are often overwhelmed, as is the visible case on Calle de la Sardana.

A dubious economic management

The citizens of Puigcerdà see how municipal finances, which belong to all taxpayers, are affected by questionable decisions of the current government. In the previous term, 300,000 euros were invested in traditional containers that have proven inappropriate, as their limited capacity has led to frequent overflows of both domestic and commercial waste.

Promise solutions

Despite these difficulties, the governing body assured months ago that it was working on a solution to integrate old containers into a new system that would incorporate smart containers and modern technologies for more sustainable management. However, good intentions have not been translated into visible actions.

Reflections on municipal management

The reality that is experienced in Puigcerdà demonstrates a lack of commitment to the citizens by a municipal team that, after two years of legislature, has shown a management that leaves much to be desired. The expectations of building a more sustainable and environmentally friendly municipality seem to move away as the mandate progresses.
