Every March 22, the world mobilizes to commemorate World Water Day, a key moment in reflecting on the situation of water resources. This year, the United Nations has decided to focus attention on the conservation of glaciers, a topic that gains urgent relevance due to the impact of climate change.

Climate change has become the main challenge of humanity in this 21st century. Currently, more than 2 million people do not have access to drinking water, and half of the world’s population faces water shortage. Catalonia, on the other hand, has been affected by a prolonged drought that is over three years old.

Despite some recent rains, the reservoirs of Catalonia are only 45% of their capacity. This figure contrasts dramatically with 65% of the last decade. The forecasts of the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) are alarming, as it is estimated that by 2027 the metropolitan region of Barcelona could face a 130 -hectometer water deficit, equivalent to about 300 Olympic pools.
Regenerated waters: a sustainable solution
In the face of this crisis, Aigües de Barcelona has found a viable alternative in regenerated water. This process involves the purification of wastewater for reuse in various fields, such as agriculture, industry and urban use. Thus, a new step is added to the water cycle, contributing to sustainability.
The process of water regeneration
Through the Water Regenerating Station of the Baix Llobregat, Aigües de Barcelona promotes up to 1,500 liters of water per second. This water, after a specific treatment, reaches the river in a position to be considered prepotable before it is purified for domestic use.
Investments in infrastructure for a resilient future
To face the challenge of drought and guarantee a suitable water supply, Aigües de Barcelona is implementing an investment plan to improve the infrastructure of the integral water cycle. These actions include the modernization of water treatment plants, such as that of the Besòs, which will allow to triple their drinking water production capacity.
Technological innovations for purification
In addition, the water treatment plant The star of Sant Feliu de Llobregat is being updated with new treatment lines that will use advanced techniques such as reverse osmosis and active carbon, thus increasing efficiency in times of water crisis.
