We celebrate astronomy in the Balearic Islands

The ‘Es nostro Cel’ project

The ‘Es nostro Cel’ project aims to bring astronomy closer to society through the own culture of the Balearic Islands. This initiative celebrates its first anniversary with a series of activities that will take place in Santanyí on Friday, May 10.

A program of varied activities

During this day, ‘Es nostro Cel’ and other organizing and collaborating entities, such as Nova Editorial Moll and the Institució Francesc de B. Moll, will propose various activities to make us real explorers of space. There will be games, a contest and an astronomical observation session.

The star and planet naming contest

The competition, presented and directed by Sebastià Barceló, will have the participation of third and fourth year ESO students from different educational centers in the Balearic Islands. These students will propose names for other stars and planets related to the culture of the Balearic Islands. The competition can be followed live through the YouTube channel of Es nostro Cel and the proposals can be voted on the website es-nostro-cel.com. The winners will receive copies of the Mallorcan Rondaies and the Rondaulles game, from Nova Editorial Moll.

Activities for all

In addition to the contest, other activities will be held during the day such as the representation of Na Filet d’Or, by the actor Salvador Miralles, known for his participation in television series such as Treufoc and La Riera. There will also be a talk by Itziar Garate about how it was possible to name a star system in the Basque Country.

Become a spacewalker

The proposal ‘Become a wanderer of space’ will take place at the Bisbe Verger public school in Santanyí. During this activity, participants will be able to enjoy games inspired by Mallorcan fables, create a personalized handkerchief and plate, and build a rocket that moves due to water pressure. To participate, you must register on the website es-nostro-cel.com.

Astronomical observation

The day will culminate with an astronomical observation session at sa Torre Nova, in Cala Santanyí. During this activity, the Newton Club will focus its attention on the constellation Hydra, which is home to na Filet d’Or, as well as other spring deep sky objects.

So, the ‘Es nostro Cel’ project is celebrating its first anniversary with a program of varied activities to bring astronomy closer to society through the culture of the Balearic Islands. It is a unique opportunity to become real space explorers and enjoy the fascinating astronomy that surrounds us.
