Weather changes surprise the Islands and the Peninsula

A DANA that is transformed into a storm

Last week, the Isolated High Level Depression (DANA) made an appearance with significant rainfall, but its evolution has taken many meteorologists by surprise. Now, it has become a storm that is affecting the Canary Islands and Madeira, generating an unstable weather environment.

Expert opinions: the surprise of Mario Picazo

Renowned meteorologists, such as Mario Picazo, have expressed their surprise at the trajectory of this storm. Picazo commented that, although the DANA has moved to the southwest, its remnants will continue to affect the Canaries. ‘We have to be attentive to the rains that can make an appearance again’, he declared.

Imminent rain in the Canary Islands

Forecasts indicate that the next 24 to 48 hours will be crucial, with the possibility of significant rainfall on the islands. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued orange warnings for La Palma, while on other islands, except Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, a yellow warning has been activated.

The consequences of instability in the Peninsula

Not only the Canary Islands will be affected. Picazo has warned that the north-west of the Peninsula must also prepare for precipitation. “There are fronts approaching the north”, he explained, emphasizing that areas such as Galicia, Asturias and the Basque Country could experience the most intense rains.

Falling temperatures: a radical change

In addition to the rains, a notable drop in temperatures is expected. ‘In the beginning, the temperatures will be pleasant’, commented Picazo, ‘but as the week progresses, the cold air from northern Europe will cause a drastic change’.

Prospects for more instability

Forecasts indicate that we could experience more weather surprises at the end of the week. Picazo has mentioned the possibility of a new cold air mass that could affect the situation, along with some additional rain, although stability will be the norm.
