A complicated Saturday for several provinces
This Saturday, a dozen provinces in Spain will face extreme weather conditions, with warnings for heat, rain and storms. According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the alerts are issued in response to forecasts of a front that will affect the peninsula.
Heat and rain: a dangerous combination
Provinces such as Córdoba, Huelva, Jaén and Seville will experience high temperatures, while Huesca, Teruel, Zaragoza and Girona will also be under surveillance. In addition, Lleida and various areas of the Navarrese Pyrenees will face storms and rain, with an orange warning for Osca.
Forecasts for the day
The AEMET predicts a day with overcast skies that will leave rain in Galicia, the Cantabrian area and other northern regions. In Galicia, conditions will improve as the hours go by, while in the east, cloud cover will remain low during the morning.
Temperatures: a notable contrast
Maximum temperatures will drop in the north-west of the peninsula and in the high areas of the Canary Islands. However, temperature increases are expected on the coast of the Gulf of Cadiz, in the Valencian Community and in the upper Ebro. In the southern half and the north-eastern valleys, temperatures could exceed 35ºC, with records of 38-40ºC in the hottest areas.
Capitals with extreme temperatures
Cities that could record the highest temperatures include Córdoba at 39ºC, followed by Zaragoza and Seville at 38ºC, and Granada, Jaén, Murcia and Toledo at 37ºC.
Wind conditions and other factors
The winds will vary between east and south in Mediterranean areas and in the north-eastern third, while in the rest of the territory winds from the west will predominate. The conditions may be particularly strong on the Galician coasts and in the Empordà, with trade winds in the Canary Islands.
Expectations for the coming days
With the forecast of hail in the south of the peninsula and a variable climate in the rest, citizens must stay informed and take precautions against these extreme weather conditions. The authorities recommend to be attentive to the updates of the AEMET.
