Worrying tendencies in the consumption of substances in Catalonia

The impact of addictions on society

The recent data collected by Project Home Catalunya in 2024 reveal that an alarming 44.8% of individuals seeking help do so due to the use of cocaine. Alcohol, meanwhile, ranks second with 40%. The director of the organization, Neus Canals, emphasized that these figures, despite being known, raise serious questions about public health and social welfare.

A consumption in housing and its repercussions

According to channels, what was considered an emergency fifteen years ago, is now perceived as a standardized situation. Although the figures are still very high, society seems to have accepted this reality without the same concern as in other times. “It is bewildering to see how the most traditional addictions are ignored, while the new substances generate more attention,” he said.

Current Consumer Profile

Cocaine has ceased to be a phenomenon restricted to certain groups; It is now prevalent in all ages, sexes and social strata. Most consumers began with recreational use, which over time has evolved into daily consumption, often alone. Its accessible availability contributes to this trend.

Alcohol: a common travel companion

Alcohol, on the other hand, is consumed daily, with a preference for low graduation drinks such as beer and wine. Alcohol users tend to have longer consumption history, which often results in a more marked deterioration in their physical and mental health.

Polyconsum: a growing reality

A worrying phenomenon that has been observed is the polyconsum, with 58.2% of patients recognizing that they use various substances simultaneously. The most common combinations include alcohol cocaine, as well as cannabis or psychoactive drugs, which indicates a search for certain effects that each substance can provide.

Increased demand demands

Project Home Catalunya has reported an increase of 14% in care during 2024, with a total of 1,771 people who have sought help. This figure reflects the growing need for support in addiction treatment, with programs offered in various centers in Catalonia, including cities such as Barcelona and Tarragona.

Prevention in schools

In addition, 8,385 people have participated in initiatives for the prevention of addictions in educational centers and other institutions, emphasizing the importance of education and awareness as key tools in the fight against these problems.
