Barcelona en Comú gives the PSC a break for municipal budgets

The commons will allow the Collboni government to process the annual accounts, but condition their definitive support to a government agreement

The municipal group of Barcelona en Comú has reduced the pressure on the government of Jaume Collboni (PSC) and has announced that it will make it easier for this Tuesday to start the process of the budgets presented by the socialist executive. Until now, the commons had demanded that there would be no gesture in favor of the annual accounts if there were no progress in the negotiation of a possible municipal government agreement. Less than 24 hours before the vote on this preliminary procedure of the most important question of any government, the formation of Ada Colau has given air to the socialists. “It’s the last blow we’re giving the municipal government,” warned BComú spokeswoman Janet Sanz from the party’s headquarters.

Although he has not specified the meaning of the votes of the commons in the extraordinary economy commission that will be held this Tuesday, since they can be abstentions or votes in favor, what he has made clear is that they will take the decision that is necessary for the budget not fail, contrary to what happened last October, when the socialists were left without support. In these balances, however, it is necessary to add the position of a key group: ERC. The republican formation is very close to the PSC, recently, in full talks for an eventual coalition government, although it has not yet expressed its official position regarding the new Collboni budget procedure. Be that as it may, with the change of attitude of the commons, it is assumed that the socialist mayor will get the approval necessary for the annual accounts proposal to be processed.

The commons give the PSC a month of leeway to negotiate a left-wing government

This technical procedure is a sign of cordiality between the groups, which must be understood in an atmosphere of dialogue for the definitive configuration of the council’s government. Now, Janet Sanz (BComú) has remarked that the facilitative provision of the commons has a deadline: 30 days. If in a month the socialists have not put forward a government offer that includes the commons in the municipal executive, the councilors of the Colau group will take a position against the Collboni budget on the day of the final vote, which will be in the final plenary of March

With this change of attitude that benefits the socialists, the spokeswoman for the commons assures that what is achieved is “the credibility of the public” so that there is a possible “left-wing” understanding in the city. “It won’t be for us”, stressed the number two of Ada Colau.
