Economic difficulties and resignations in Catalonia
A study by Oxfam Intermón reveals that in Catalonia, 24% of respondents or someone in their household have had to give up visits to the dentist for financial reasons, while 11% have had to do so with the psychologist. These figures highlight the economic difficulties faced by a significant part of the Catalan population, according to the Survey of Multiple Inequalities in Spain, based on 4,102 interviews, including 699 in Catalonia.
Reduction of Basic Expenses and Difficulties in Food and Rent
At state level, 46% of the population has had to reduce basic household expenses in the last year, with an even higher percentage among women, reaching 50%. In Catalonia, 34% of the population buys less food due to economic problems and 38% do not have enough money to face unforeseen events exceeding 600 euros. In addition, 52% of respondents in Catalonia dedicate between 30% and 50% of their income to paying rent, while 19% allocate between 50% and 70%.
Demands of the Population and Level of Satisfaction
The Catalan population highlights the importance of promoting quality employment, decent housing and a quality public education system as key measures to fight inequalities. However, despite these difficulties, 64% of Catalans are satisfied with their working life and nearly 48% are satisfied with their personal economic situation.
Reality at State Level
At state level, more than half of the population has had to make significant cuts in the purchase of food, clothing and footwear, with 40% claiming to have bought less meat or fish and 32% less fruit and vegetables. In addition, 43% of the population cannot afford to go on vacation for one week a year. Women and racialized people have higher quit rates, and people with low socioeconomic status see cuts soar up to 10 points above the population average.
