A Global Overview of Monkeypox
The recent proliferation of cases of monkeypox, also known as mpox, has raised alarm bells internationally. Although most new cases are reported in Africa, the possibility of global spread has led many countries to adopt preventive measures.
The Minister of Health’s Call for Calm
In a recent interview on RNE, Spain’s health minister, Mónica García, stressed the importance of staying calm and following a science-based approach. García urged political leaders, particularly those from the Partido Popular, to moderate their reactions and avoid spreading misinformation that could cause panic among the population.
Preparation and Surveillance
Despite the concerns, Garcia reaffirmed that the Spanish health system is well prepared to deal with a possible increase in cases. However, he also acknowledged the need to intensify surveillance and update monitoring strategies to prevent the spread of the virus.
Key Aspects of Vaccination
Regarding vaccination, the minister clarified that immunization is only recommended for risk groups, especially those with a high frequency of intimate contacts, given that transmission of the virus occurs mainly through this type of interaction.
Variants and New Strategies
The variant recently identified in Africa has shown a notable incidence in smaller populations, suggesting that intimate contact is not the only mode of transmission. García therefore urged healthcare workers to receive the vaccine as a preventive measure, recalling that many already did so during the 2022 outbreak.
Coordination between Communities
To ensure that monkeypox does not spread, García called for cooperation between all autonomous communities. He stressed that the ministry works closely with each region to implement homogeneous and effective measures, emphasizing that it is not a matter of competition, but of coordinated action to protect the population.
Looking to the Future
The current situation requires a clear and unified approach. As the world faces this new threat, it is crucial that messages of calm and prevention prevail, ensuring that the population is well informed and protected against any eventuality.
