The region records historical highs in the month of January

La Garrotxa experienced an extraordinary day this Thursday in terms of the weather. In the middle of winter, the region has enjoyed spring-like temperatures. This is confirmed by the records achieved by the Meteorological Service of Catalonia.

Both in Olot and in the Vall d’en Bas, the temperature record for the month of January has been exceeded. With more than two decades of data, Meteocat had never measured a temperature as high as today’s in La Garrotxa. The highest maximum was recorded in the Vall d’en Bas: 25.3 degrees, two degrees more than the previous record set on January 20, 2007. The temperature in the Vall d’en Bas has been the second highest in Catalonia this Thursday.

Olot also breaks its heat record

In the capital of La Garrotxa, a maximum of 25.2 degrees has been reached, one tenth less than in the Vall d’en Bas. According to Meteocat, 21 of the 117 observatories in Catalonia have exceeded their record highs in January. The highest temperature this Thursday also occurred in Girona, specifically in Anglès (25.4 degrees). They are three degrees less than the heat record that was reached in Catalonia: 28 degrees at the Ebro Observatory on January 28, 2021.

An anomalous situation that will repeat itself

Meteorological experts explain that this anomalous situation is due to the entry of warm air from Africa which has caused an increase in temperature throughout the territory. In addition, the lack of wind and clouds has favored the thermometers to have shot up. According to the forecasts, this trend will continue for the next few days, with temperatures well above the average for the month of January.

A rare meteorological phenomenon

These high temperatures in the middle of winter are the result of a rare meteorological phenomenon known as ‘warm wind’. It is a current of air that comes from low latitudes and that warms as it ascends through the mountains. This causes high areas to have higher temperatures than low areas, as happened today in Garrotxa.
