Fornalutx is looking for solutions to reduce traffic and water consumption

Sensors to count vehicles and parking spaces

Fornalutx intends to analyze how tourism influences its territory and prevent the congestion that occurs during the summer months. One of the initiatives that the City Council has in mind is the placement of sensors that would allow the cars entering the town to be measured and also the number of free parking spaces through a tracking system. Thus, “we would have objective data to be able to intervene by limiting the access of vehicles or to inform if there are parking spaces available”, said the Councilor for Tourism, Gori Mayol.

TIB minibus with more frequencies

Another action to help reduce road traffic in the municipality is to “increase the frequency of the TIB minibus”, added the councillor. For this reason, Mayol again asked the Council to connect Sóller and Fornalutx with a minibus from the Bellavista stop to the Teixidores parking lot with a minimum of 4 daily trips with a suitable canopy with the village landscape at the Turó stop , “since it was a line used a lot by the people of Fornalutx and the current one is more oriented towards tourists”, he explained.

Meeting with the island director of Tourism

These requests were made during a meeting that took place with the island director of Tourism, Pedro Mas, the mayor of Fornalutx, Xisco Marroig and the Councilor of Tourism where, in addition to these matters, the increase in water consumption and the generation of waste during the high season, effects derived from the increase in visitors in the summer. In this sense, the City Council also requested support from the Council “to manage subsidies to improve water efficiency, a resource that is increasingly scarce and that needs to be managed”, the councilor added. Unaccounted water in Fornalutx is at 40%, a figure that has increased compared to 2000 when supply losses were at 30%.

Vacation rental inspections

During the meeting with the municipal representatives of Fornalutx, the Minister of Tourism informed that they will continue with the inspections of the holiday rental and will act as a sanctioning body to control the illegal tourist rental, after detecting 155 places distributed in 28 homes.
