Innovation in Colon Cancer Detection: Liquid Biopsy Test with Green Light

Deepening the Research

With the green light to validate a liquid biopsy test in blood that promises to revolutionize the detection of colon cancer, researchers at Hospital del Mar in Barcelona have achieved a remarkable success. Their work, recently published in ‘Annals of Oncology’, examined 623 blood samples with the aim of improving diagnostic accuracy.

Increased sensitivity

By analyzing multiple markers, a remarkable increase in sensitivity has been observed in the detection of circulating tumor DNA. These markers, present even in very early stages of the tumor, offer a unique opportunity to diagnose cancer effectively from the initial stages.

Results of the Work

The test, validated in people who had already undergone a colonoscopy, has shown comparable performance to other current diagnostic options. By using different strategies simultaneously, such as the detection of DNA mutations, methylations and fragmentation, the spectrum of possible markers is expanded.

Sensitivity Comparable to Population Screening

Compared to the faecal occult blood test used in population screening in Catalonia, the liquid biopsy test demonstrates a similar sensitivity, exceeding 80% of detection. This innovation can help increase public participation in screening programs, opening new avenues in the fight against colon cancer.

Promoting Citizen Participation

With the hope of encouraging public participation in screening programs, the authors of the work are confident that this new type of test can become a key tool for the early detection of colon cancer. It is a promising step towards a more effective and accessible diagnosis.
