A unique place in Alt Empordà
La Caula is the name given to an impressive waterfall thirty meters high that is located in the center of Les Escaules, within the municipality of Boadella. It is one of the most beautiful and unique places in the Alt Empordà, which reflects the effects of different meteorological phenomena. When it is very cold and there are frosts, the Caula turns into a spectacle of ice and snow. When it rains a lot and the torrent it forms overflows, the Caula becomes a majestic and noisy waterfall.
La Caula is located in an area of travertines, with caves that witnessed prehistoric times and captivated artists such as Marcel Duchamp or Man Ray in the 20th century. La Caula had its own festival, the Muga Caula, and has always been a meeting point for Emporda residents and visitors. Now, La Caula is also showing the saddest side of the drought that affects this part of the regional geography, near the Muga river.
In the video below, which is from 2020, Caula still had her beauty.
Un contrast natural
The current image of the waterfall is very different from the moments of glory of the Caula, which has suffered some tragic episodes, such as the flood of September 17, 2010, which brought down part of its structure. The stones collapsed on the gorge, a much-loved and frequented bathing space.
In La Caula there is a restaurant that in good weather allows you to eat and drink in the shade and there is also an ice well that is worth knowing. The space is a mandatory stop for cyclists and walkers. It is part of the rich visitable catalog of the territory that comprises the Consorci de les Salines and Bassegoda, the pearl of the inner Empordà.
