Caravanning, an upward trend after the pandemic
The motorhome sector is experiencing a moment of splendor, especially after the health crisis caused by Covid-19. Many travelers have opted for this mode of transport and accommodation which allows them to enjoy nature and freedom without giving up comforts. According to data from the Spanish Motorhome Federation (FEAC), the number of motorhomes registered in the demarcation of Lleida has grown by 30% in the last two years, from 1,500 in 2021 to 1,950 in 2023.
Lleida, a destination ready to welcome motorhome tourism
This increase in demand for motorhomes has meant that the regions of Lleida have adapted to offer the services and facilities necessary for this type of tourism. Currently, the demarcation has 72 service areas and 1,081 places to park and spend the night with motorhomes. These areas offer services such as electrical connections, water supply, rest areas and surveillance. The region with the most service areas is Urgell, with 15, followed by Noguera, with 11, and Segrià, with 10.
This information is collected in the study “Motorhome tourism in the demarcation of Lleida”, prepared by the Department of Inland and Mountain Tourism of the University of Lleida (UdL), which analyzes the tourism sector of motorhomes in Lleida, with data updated in 2023.
The regions of Ponent, the most benefited by the boom in motorhomes
Motorhome tourism has been an opportunity for the regions of Ponent, which traditionally were not the most visited by tourists. These counties have been able to take advantage of their natural, cultural and gastronomic attractions to capture the interest of motorhome travelers. Activities and experiences related to oil tourism, wine tourism or fruit tourism, a rich monumental and architectural heritage, the creation of new cultural activities and the enhancement of some already existing ones have made the Terres de Lleida have become a quality tourist destination that meets some of the main requirements that caravan lovers are looking for: nature, tranquility and authenticity.
According to the UdL study, professor Jaume Macià, author of the study, highlights that the Ponent counties have been able to adapt to this change in the way they travel, while the Pyrenees and the Aran already had ‘a consolidated accommodation offer. Thus, motorhomes have contributed to diversifying and de-seasonalizing tourism in the Lleida region.
