Restoration of historic ships in the Port of Tarragona

Discovery and transfer

The Port of Tarragona has started the restoration of the remains of two wooden boats from the 17th-18th centuries, dedicated to port activity. The remains of these ships were discovered in 2012 during the removal of the railway crossing in the city’s Plaça dels Carros.

The two boats, known as 1 and 500, were transferred to the Center for Underwater Archeology of Catalonia, in Girona, to begin conservation treatments. Now, they are in the process of being transferred to Tarragona for their definitive restoration and assembly.

Exhibition at the Tarragona Port Museum

It is planned that these boats will be located definitively in the central part of the Museum route, on a two-level platform to be fully seen by the public. The Port of Tarragona anticipates that during the last quarter of 2024 the boats can be definitively displayed at the Tarragona Port Museum.

Project award

The company in charge of the restoration is Rehatec Obres i Restauracions S.A.U., specialized in different profiles of rehabilitation. The budget for these tasks is 100,988 euros (without VAT) and the expected period of execution is 8 months.
