The Berguedà Nature Defense Group
The Berguedà Nature Defense Group (GDNB) is an organization that opposes the Department of Territory’s project to act on the C-16, between Berga and Bagà. Environmentalists consider that this expansion of the road is not sustainable and goes against the mobility model based on the private vehicle.
The mobility model
According to the GDNB, the extension of the C-16 perpetuates a model of mobility that is not sustainable. Environmentalists argue that traffic problems in Alt Berguedà will only be solved if the volume of traffic is reduced and public transport alternatives are offered.
The announced performances
The Berguedà Nature Defense Group argues that the actions announced for the C-16 project do not promote mobility in the area, but rather contribute to an increase in the volume of vehicles.
The reduction of vehicles
According to the GDNB, only the reduction of vehicles on the road can solve the traffic problems in Alt Berguedà. This must be accompanied by a reinforcement of public transport and the arrival of new methods of transport in the region, such as the train.
The tourist model of Cerdanya
The GDNB also points out the need to rethink the tourism model of Cerdanya, as they consider it to be one of the main reasons for the mobility problems in the Eix del Llobregat. In addition, they claim that this tourist model contributes to the expulsion of the working class from the neighboring region.
Criticism of the Government of the Generalitat
The Berguedà Nature Defense Group accuses the Government of the Generalitat of lying to councils and public opinion, of embezzling public funds, of practicing climate denialism, of breaching the 2030 Agenda and of political incoherence.
The environmental impacts
The GDNB warns of the possible environmental impacts that the C-16 project may have, such as affecting the Sierra de la Petita de Berga and damaging the Romanesque El Far bridge and the Llobregat river. In addition, they emphasize that this expansion of the road will mean the emission of millions of tons of polluting gases into the atmosphere, which is not in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.
The GDNB’s response
The Berguedà Nature Defense Group confirms that the legal and administrative battle to stop this project will continue. In addition, they announce that they will undertake mobilizations and actions to stop the project, since they consider it to be reckless for Alt Berguedà.
