180 years of history of the Girona Fire Brigade

A fortnight of events to commemorate the 180th anniversary

The Girona Fire Department is celebrating its 180th anniversary this year and, for this reason, they have prepared around fifteen events, including an open day, a mock performance, a commemorative book, a double exhibition and the restoration of a ‘Magirus’ brand truck that was in service in the city from 1956 to 1993, according to the Acn. The program, which will last until December, begins on Friday with the institutional event. Also noteworthy is the recreation of a historical photograph of the body that dates back to the end of the 19th century.

The Girona Fire Brigade, the second oldest body in Catalonia

The Girona Fire Brigade was born in 1884, when the first regulations were approved and equipment was bought, according to Xavier Vilardell, one of the firefighters who is part of the organizing committee. This document accredits the creation of the Girona Fire Brigade and places them as the second oldest body in Catalonia (after Barcelona).

Since then, and under the umbrella of the City Council, the Provincial Council and the Generalitat, this city and the towns that surround it have had a fire brigade dedicated to surveillance, security, rescue and service to the citizenship, the organization points out.
