Catalan Politics and Negotiations with the Spanish State

Building a Political Narrative

Even the most classic stereotype of the Catalan family member has understood the importance of constructing a political story that justifies actions. However, instead of developing a coherent story, the Catalan political class has chosen to build a narrative disconnected from the facts, which seeks to justify any decision, even those that could be contrary to its ideology.

Fortunately, the Constitutional Court has recently resolved an appeal presented by the PSC that would prevent Carles Puigdemont and Lluís Puig from voting electronically. Furthermore, it has been announced that former Minister Francesc Homs will have to face trial for having authorized three expenses related to the independence process in 2012, despite the fact that this case had been archived on two previous occasions when it was considered that the events were not criminal.

The policy of the pact with the Spanish State, which the pro-independence parties try to take advantage of, usually ends in disappointment. This is because once the votes are cast, Spanish politics are under no obligation to keep promises, and the Spanish powers are always ready to reverse any progress.

The Dynamics of Political Negotiation

The strategy of building a discourse around the logic of political negotiation with the State inevitably leads to displacing the national conflict towards the social sphere, minimizing it. However, reality shows that the logic of political negotiation with the State is inherently illogical for those who call themselves independentists.

The Spanish State has managed to get the independence parties themselves to sell the idea that the anti-Catalan macrostructure can be negotiated politically. Despite attempts to demand Spanish concessions in the name of negotiation, Spain always remembers who is in control, leading the independence parties from victimization to pact, and back to victimization.

Political Challenges and Strategies

Faced with the blows of Spanish reality, the strategy of the pro-independence parties seems to consist of ignoring or trying to distract attention. However, this attitude can undermine your credibility, as voters may perceive a lack of coherence between your speech and your actions.

The pro-independence parties seek to build a parallel political reality in which their strategy is seen as a way to overthrow the State, but they face the constant reminder that true success continues to be on the Spanish side.
