The importance of the elections to the European Parliament
Next Sunday, June 9, we will have the opportunity to choose our representatives in the European Parliament. These elections, which are held every five years, have a significant impact on the political, cultural, social, economic and defensive future of Europe. It is an occasion to express our opinion and influence the decisions that affect the continent.
Citizen participation
In the previous elections, participation in Spain was 60.7%, while in the European Union it was 50.7%. This year, with the municipal elections already held, a low turnout is expected. It is important to ask ourselves why there is this disaffection with the European elections. Perhaps it is because the European institutions seem distant from the citizens, or because there are democratic deficits in the functioning of the Commission and the Council. Whatever the reason, a low turnout can favor the most radical positions and condition the future of the continent.
Europe and its challenges
Europe needs fresh air, commitment and a desire to share. Despite concerns about immigration and demographics, it is important not to fall into simplistic solutions or the us-them divide. Europe has been built on common values and has achieved advances in individual rights, stability and peace. It is essential to value the successes and face the challenges that are presented to us.
An opportunity for Europe
On June 9, we have the opportunity to choose the path we want for Europe. We can go dark or light, but it’s important to remember that even the faintest light can make a difference. We bring light to the darkness and build a better future for Europe.
