A global independent study, the demand of the City Council and the experts
The situation of soil contaminated by Ercros in Flix is a matter of concern to both local authorities and researchers. Flix City Council is calling for a global independent study to be carried out that analyzes the scope and consequences of subsoil and groundwater pollution, as well as possible solutions. The director of the Catalan Waste Agency, Josep Maria Tost, has stated that the land will be characterized in a few months, but has not specified when the global study will be carried out.
A century of contamination by the chemical activity of Ercros
The chemical company Ercros has a long history in Flix, where it started operating in 1897. For a century, its activity has left a mark of pollution on the soil and water of the Flix reservoir, where waste has accumulated of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride and other chlorinated organic compounds. These pollutants can affect human health and the ecosystem. According to soil characterization reports, high levels of heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic are detected in the soils. At the moment, the Catalan Waste Agency has only declared 2 hectares as contaminated soil, but the affected area could be much larger.
Catalan public television is recording a documentary series on the history of Flix
To publicize the historical events that have marked Flix’s life, Catalan public television has begun filming “The scene of the events”, a documentary series that is based on the research and dissemination of events that had place in different parts of the country. One of the chapters will be dedicated to Flix, where episodes such as the construction of the hydroelectric plant, industrialization, the civil war, the battle of the Ebro, the democratic transition and the independence process will be reviewed. The program will feature the testimony of people who have experienced or studied these events, such as Marc Puigdomènech and Josep Felip Monclús, who signed the commitment for independence in 2015.
A solidarity challenge to cross the Ebro and help little Marc
Roquetes athlete Albert Giné has a dream: to cross the course of the Ebro on the GR-99, from Fontibre to the Delta. But he will not do it alone, but will have the support and affection of many people who will follow him and accompany him in his solidarity challenge. The reason for this adventure is to raise funds and gifts for the party of little Marc, a boy from Flix who has struggled to survive since he was born with a heart malformation. Albert Giné wants to pay tribute to him and show him that he is not alone, that he has an entire town and country by his side.
The Democratic Memorial removes the human remains from the Memorial of the Battle of the Ebro
After three years of controversy, the general management of the Democratic Memorial has decided to remove the human remains that were in the Memorial of the Battle of the Ebro, in Flix. These are 144 bones that came from civil war mass graves and that were before the 18th century. The decision has satisfied the relatives of those who disappeared during the war, who demanded that DNA tests be carried out on all the remains in the ossuary in order to be able to identify them and give them a dignified burial.
