Lloret de Mar will have a mobile desalination plant for its hotels

The plant will not be able to connect to the public network this summer due to the complexity of the works

The hoteliers of Lloret de Mar will have a mobile desalination plant this season to guarantee the supply of water to their establishments, given the drought affecting the area. This is what Catalunya Ràdio reported this Monday, according to ACN. The plant, which the businessmen have paid for out of their own pockets, will not be able to connect to the municipality’s public water network, as the work required to do so is complicated and will not be ready by this summer. For this reason, hoteliers will take advantage of the desalinated water to fill their swimming pools and offer the rest to neighbors who want to buy it for their own. In fact, there are already the first people interested in acquiring one, and they are not from the village, but from Tossa de Mar, the neighboring municipality.

Hoteliers want to prevent tourists from noticing the water restrictions

The mobile desalination plant is a temporary solution that the hoteliers of Lloret de Mar decided to adopt a few weeks ago, in the face of the water restrictions that they anticipate will remain throughout the summer. The idea is that tourists visiting the municipality can enjoy the swimming pools without problems and that businessmen do not lose customers for this reason. The plant has a capacity to produce about 500 cubic meters of water per day, which will be sufficient to cover the needs of the hotels.

Surplus desalinated water will be sold to neighbors and Tossa de Mar

The hoteliers of Lloret de Mar don’t want to waste the water they save from the mobile desalination plant and that’s why they have offered to sell it to neighbors who need it for their swimming pools. In addition, they have also received the proposal from the Tossa de Mar Council, which has shown its interest in buying part of the surplus to supply its hotels and campsites. The mayor has offered to pay part of the plant’s investment so that the desalinated water also reaches its tourist establishments. In Tossa de Mar there are around thirty swimming pools that should be refilled this summer and that is why they calculate that two cisterns a day would be enough to ensure water levels.
