Millionaire penalty for police who rented precarious housing to migrants in Palma

The case

The Balearic Government has imposed a fine of 2,040,068 euros on a local police officer in Palma, arrested in November, for managing storage rooms and commercial premises without adequate conditions to fraudulently rent them as homes to migrants, charging between 300 and 750 euros per month. In total, the official managed 73 rooms in which the victims lived in unsanitary conditions.

The violations

The General Directorate of Housing, dependent on the Department of Housing, Territory and Mobility, has sanctioned the company through which the agent managed the housing for the commission of 68 very serious infractions, which constitutes the largest fine of this type. imposed to date.

Precarious conditions

According to the investigations, the policeman managed storage rooms and commercial premises in Palma, using them as homes in terrible conditions for dozens of migrants, mostly of Hispanic American origin. These homes were located in neighborhoods in the Gomila area and near several streets in Palma.

Risks and handling

Many of the homes lacked lighting and ventilation, with a ‘living’ space of just eight to 15 square meters, equipped with a toilet, a shower, a stove and a refrigerator. In addition, gas cylinders were found, representing a risk to life in case of escape. The police officer also manipulated the electricity bills so that the tenants paid more than they consumed.

Investigation and consequences

The agent is being investigated for alleged crimes of favoring irregular immigration, against moral integrity and fraud, following a complaint filed by the Inspection service of the Ministry of Housing, Territory and Mobility with the National Police. In addition, one of the victims fraudulently registered 12 other people in an irregular situation in Spain and has also been arrested for such reasons.
