The dilemma of the Catalan Economic Model

The debate on the ‘country model’ in Catalonia is a recurring topic that raises diverse opinions. In this context, it is important to examine the role of tourism in the Catalan economy, the diversity of tourists who arrive each year, as well as the industrial capacity of the territory. In addition, it is essential to address how an effective transfer of knowledge can be promoted to improve the labor market, guaranteeing decent wages and less temporary work.

The Challenge of Economic Transformation

Significantly transforming the sectoral composition of the Catalan economy is a challenge that cannot be achieved simply through decrees. Unlike centralized systems like the one in Moscow, where decisions were taken from planning offices, Catalonia needs a more dynamic approach adapted to its reality. It cannot be conceived as a board game where the pieces can be relocated at will to prioritize sectors.

Incentives: The Key to Change

To move towards a more qualified work environment, incentives become fundamental. These can be fiscal, with deductions that encourage activities with added value, or they can have an administrative and political nature, focusing on attracting both internal and external investments. The key lies in creating an environment where companies can grow without the bureaucratic hurdles that often slow down their development.

Contradictory Policies and their Consequences

Recently, a legislative amendment related to the America’s Cup has been brought to light which has generated controversy. Through tax exemptions, this event has been allowed to be exempt from paying various taxes, while family SMEs continue to bear tax burdens that make it difficult for them to continue. This contradiction between what is promoted and what is practiced can create a climate of insecurity for local industries.

A Necessary Reflection

It is essential to understand that economic decisions have repercussions. If incentives are our only tool to shape the economy, we need to make sure they go in the right direction. The preservation of local industry must be a priority, preventing it from being threatened by decisions that favor ephemeral sectors. The question that remains is whether we will succeed, one day, in harmonizing the tax system with the real needs of our economic model.
