The challenge of the elections and the critical situation of ERC in Catalonia

A new political panorama in Catalonia

The investiture debate and the strategic crisis of ERC have shifted the focus from the real dilemma faced by the Catalan obedience parties. For years, these parties, known as independentistas, have lost their dominance in the Generalitat, something unprecedented in the electoral history of the Catalan parliament. There had always been a winning option for the ERC, CiU (and derivatives) and CUP parties (with the help, in 1980, of Centristes de Catalunya). However, currently, the sum of votes from ERC, Junts, the CUP and the newcomer Aliança Catalana only reaches 61 deputies, marking a period of unprecedented weakness.

The leadership crisis and the lack of strategy

Attention has been diverted to secondary debates, such as the future of Junqueras or Puigdemont’s ability to pressure the PSC, rather than addressing the central dilemma: how to regain hegemony in Catalonia. The current crisis is monumental and lacks clear solutions. The uncertainty is aggravated by the lack of a clear strategy on the part of the Catalan parties of obedience.

The need for a constructive approach

It is crucial to change the approach and find a way for the majority of deputies in the Catalan parliament to be of Catalan obedience, which is fundamental for the future of the region. This involves overcoming internal disputes, renewing leadership with younger figures, and focusing on country-building rather than focusing solely on political discourse.

Challenges and perspectives

Parties face the challenge of burying internal differences, offering generational leadership options and adopting a vision of nation-building. The survival and durability of parties will depend on their ability to regenerate and adapt to current demands. It is essential that parties of Catalan obedience regain their relevance for the future of Catalonia.
