The culture of responsibility in Catalan society
If anyone follows social media, they may have noticed that one of the most thriving industries in our country is the production of cigarette paper. The Catalans are specialists in its use, and even more so in the pro-independence/sovereignist/nationalist sector. This use makes us demanding of others and lenient with ourselves, it is a sport that many Catalans enjoy and that consists of always blaming others. Sometimes we adopt a pontifical attitude of “I told you so”, a childish reminiscence that diverts responsibility towards the environment, society, the system… any group or totem that frees us from a sense of own responsibility.
The need for consolidation
There are specialists in centrifugation, and there are those who have even adopted it as a brand of corporate and partisan identity. Now, that’s how it goes. In an emergency situation, it may be necessary to shore up one’s own foundations first, make the message comprehensible and return to the basic issues. Those questions that are summed up so well in the slogan: language, culture, country. Before expanding, it seems to me that it is necessary to consolidate. Consolidate inside and outside. Consolidate by making Catalanity common and attractive again. Consolidate by looking for country consensus, which, in other times, we had been able to achieve. But to do that, you need less rolling paper and more rolling up your sleeves and grinding stone, and that costs more.
Individual and collective responsibility
We will have to keep grinding, get up every morning and set possible and exciting goals, because no one will do the work for us. It is necessary to stop using cigarette paper and end the eternal division of those who consider themselves to be of the same camp.
