The PSOE of Arrecife, San Bartolomé and Tías opposes private platforms such as Uber or Cabify

The PSOE rejects private transport platforms

The PSOE of Arrecife, San Bartolomé and Tías have expressed their opposition to private transport platforms such as Uber or Cabify. This position arises in response to the proposal of the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, to implement these platforms to solve the lack of taxis in the port of the Lanzarote capital and at the airport. The PSOE considers that these platforms are not the appropriate solution and requests that both areas be declared sensitive areas.

The importance of regulating the taxi service

The PSOE highlights the importance of regulating the taxi service in the Port of Arrecife and the Airport through agreements with the sector. According to the PSOE spokesperson in Arrecife, Alfredo Mendoza, and the mayors of San Bartolomé and Tías, Isidro Pérez and José Juan Cruz, respectively, it is necessary to improve the taxi service on the island, but this must be done by listening to the sector and agreeing on the appropriate measures with taxi drivers. The PSOE is confident that the island’s taxi cooperatives are capable of improving the service without resorting to privatization.

Unanimous support of the Insular Executive of the PSOE

The PSOE has obtained the unanimous support of the Insular Executive headed by the insular secretary, María Dolores Corujo. During the meeting, it was recognized that at specific times, due to high tourist demand, there are waiting lines at the Port of Arrecife and at the Airport, which generates an increase in waiting time at other stops. The PSOE considers that it is necessary to have more taxi licenses in some municipalities and that all the licenses granted are operational. These issues must be agreed upon at a table in which the sector is heard and the Cabildo and the town councils are represented.

Specific support for taxis from other municipalities

The PSOE also agrees that in events with large influx of public on the island, such as festivities, taxis from other municipalities punctually support the service in the host town. This measure could also be applied in the Port of Arrecife and the Airport in exceptional times and in accordance with the sector.

Commitment to quality service

The PSOE ensures that taxi professionals are committed to offering a quality service to both the resident population and tourists, avoiding waits and queues at the Port of Arrecife, the Airport and other stops. However, remember that for taxis from other municipalities to be able to load passengers in these infrastructures, the Cabildo must declare them sensitive areas in terms of transportation.

The importance of regulating the taxi service

The general secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, considers that the declaration of sensitive areas of the Port of Arrecife and the Airport in terms of transport would allow the taxi service to be regulated in these areas, regardless of the municipality in which they are registered.
